Lean into a flowy gravel descent with cool Waimea air rushing past, then let the e-bike smooth the next climb as Mauna Kea rises beyond the open pasture.
Quick Local Tip: Don’t let the gravel road turn you off—this is where the scenery opens up. Mana Road takes you deep into Hawai‘i Island’s backcountry, through quiet ranchland and wide-open high-country views you simply don’t get from the highway.
Start at Anna Ranch in Waimea, where your guide fits you to a full-suspension Specialized Turbo e-mountain bike and gets the group comfortable before setting out. The electric assist makes the longer distance and climbing more manageable while still keeping you actively riding the terrain.
From Anna Ranch, head into the ranchlands above Waimea and onto the historic Mana Road route along the lower slopes of Mauna Kea. Once used to move cattle toward Hilo, this backcountry road passes through a landscape tied closely to Hawai‘i Island’s ranching history and paniolo culture, with your guide sharing local history and geography along the way.
Across more than 20 miles, settle into a steady mix of rolling gravel, mild climbs, relaxed cruising, and flowy descents. The route is adventurous without being overly technical, giving you room to enjoy the ride instead of constantly picking your way through difficult terrain.
As the ranch country opens around you, look toward Mauna Kea and the Kohala Mountains, with views reaching toward the Kohala Coast on clear days. Long stretches of quiet backroad and open pasture give the ride its defining character: plenty of ground to cover, room to let the bike roll, and a very different side of Hawai‘i Island from the coast below.
