Waimea Ranch E-Mountain Bike Tour

Tour Highlights

Breathe in Waimea’s cool upland air as you pedal toward historic Anna Ranch, with rolling paniolo country ahead and the Big Island seeming to grow smaller behind you with every turn of the pedals.

  • Climb nearly 1,200 feet into Waimea’s upland ranch country
  • Choose a traditional mountain bike or electric-assist e-MTB
  • Ride flowing singletrack through switchbacks and open cattle pasture
  • Take in panoramic views of Hawai‘i Island’s major volcanoes
  • Explore private ranchland rarely accessible to independent riders
  • Swim in a private waterfall for an end of the tour cool down

Quick Local Tip: Trust the bike on the descent. These are quality mountain bikes built for this terrain, so stay relaxed, look through the turn, and lean into the corner—you’ll feel the bike grip the trail and carry you smoothly through the switchbacks.

What to Expect

Start at the ranch headquarters in Waimea, where your guide fits your bike, gives you time to get comfortable with it, and explains the terrain ahead. From there, cross Kohakohau Stream and leave the ranch buildings behind as the trail begins climbing into the cool, green hills above Waimea.

The route steadily gains nearly 1,200 feet over 6 miles, winding through ranchland on narrow dirt trails with hairpin turns, switchbacks, and sections of flowy singletrack cut into the hillside. Your guide talks you through the changing terrain and offers pointers for handling the climbs and tighter turns as the trail works its way higher into the pasture.

At the upper portion of the ride, stop for a trail snack near the stream and take in broad views across Hawai‘i Island. On clear days, the landscape opens toward Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Hualālai, and the island’s western coastline, with open ranch country stretching below.

The ride back is where the speed really opens up. Shift from rugged singletrack to faster-flowing jeep roads as you descend through the ranch, with fresh views unfolding across the green uplands and coastline below. To finish, take a short hike to a remote waterfall tucked away on private property, a hidden ranch gem that most visitors never get to see.
