Hilo Evening Volcano Guided Tour

Location: Hilo, Big Island

Make Kilauea Volcano and Hawai'i Volcanoes National park your destination, with a past-sunset adventure! Join us for a fully narrated night tour of the volcanoes on Big Island. We'll meet at the Grand Naniloa Hotel in downtown Hilo. As we head towards the park, the lush greenery of Hilo starts to give way to stark, black basalt lava flows.

The Kīlauea volcano eruption paused on September 17th, 2023. No lava or night-time glow is visible from any overlooks. Volcanic conditions can change at any time.

What to Expect

We'll pass through Kalapana, a village completely destroyed by advancing lava just a few years ago. We believe a good Hilo lava tour gets you up-close-and-personal with the lava, so we'll stop to walk across the recent lava flows to the island's most recent black sand beach. You'll see first-hand how the volcano swallowed everything in its path, even completely filling in Kaimu Bay with molten lava. Once the best swimming beach on Hawaii Island, you can now walk a road of lava where the volcano carved its path.

Next stop is the Lava Viewing Area in Kalapana, where your vehicle drives over the lava flows that overran the highway. Look for any current volcanic activity available before heading to the Painted Church. Now decommissioned, it was the first home in Hawaii to Saint Damien before he famously found his calling among the lepers of Molokai. This Church was so important to the determined local villagers that it was moved, not once, but twice, to evade the advancing molten lava flows.

Finally, your trained park ranger guide reveals the highlights of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, including volcanic craters, steam vents, the Kilauea Iki Overlook.

During the tour you can expect moderate air temperatures at sea level with cooler temperatures at higher elevations; occasional rain showers; strenuous hike across uneven and steep, rocky terrain including black lava rock.

After exploring the Volcano, we head back down to Hilo to return you to the Grand Naniloa Hotel.

*Red molten lava may not be seen and cannot be guaranteed. Volcanic activity changes constantly and cannot be guaranteed.
