Grand Circle Hawaii Island Tour

Location: Waikoloa

Hawaii’s largest and youngest island is quite possibly the most dramatic and awe-inspiring in the Hawaiian chain. Of all the Hawaiian Islands, the Island of Hawaii is a world apart. Incredibly, 80 percent of the world’s ecosystems are found here, including rain forests, grasslands, wetlands, and even a rare alpine desert dating to the Pleistocene Epoch. So, while a day isn’t quite enough to experience all the natural beauties and wonders Hawai’i Island offers, we like to believe this Big Island Circle Day Tour itinerary does a pretty good job.

What to Expect

On this daylong adventure, departing from Kona, you will pass through lava fields where various shades of solidified lava reveal the entire island’s past volcanic activity. You will actually see a distinct dividing line where the lava fields end and the lush farmland begins.

Your arrival in the middle of a vast lava field might almost seem like a moon landing. Lava, now solidified, has created a wave-like, rippled field that spreads out as far as the eye can see. If this isn’t drama enough, the landscape does a 180º along the western coast of the island where tropical bounty abounds.

Along the way, you’ll make a delicious stop at Royal Kona Coffee in the midst of Hawaii Island’s famous coffee-growing region. It’s a remarkable place of organic beauty, where lush coffee bean trees seem to spring up among the other island foliage. The area overlooks Kealakekua Bay, offering spectacular views of its pristine waters.

You will visit Punaluu Beach, the amazing black sand beach where sea turtles often nest. Next you will be on your way to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, beginning at the Jaggar Museum and Hawaii Volcano Observatory. This is where you’ll find Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, and Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. There is also the impressive Kilauea Iki Crater and, located in a small crater, the Fern Tree Jungle. If conditions are safe, you can even circle the crater along Crater Rim Drive before our return trip to West Hawaii Island for hotel and resort drop offs.
