Paddle into a Waikīkī wave with your coach beside you, pop to your feet, and feel the board take off beneath you. Learn where generations of surfers have taken their first rides, backed by the teaching standards of North Shore surf legend Jamie O’Brien.
Quick Local Tip: Jamie O’Brien is famous for being psyched to surf and making sure he’s having fun doing it and that attitude carries over to his instructors. Expect plenty of encouragement, high-fives, and genuine excitement when you catch a wave. The goal isn’t to make surfing intimidating or overly serious; it’s to get you up, riding, and having a good time.
Meet your instructors on the sands of Waikīkī. The coaching team is personally selected and trained by Jamie, bringing his approach to surfing into a lesson built around beginners and first-time surfers. Get fitted with your equipment, meet your coach, and prepare for the water just steps from the shoreline.
Before paddling out, start with instruction on the beach. Your coach walks you through ocean awareness, paddling, stance, and the pop-up, giving you time to practice the movement and make adjustments while your board is still sitting firmly on the sand.
Then grab your board and walk into the Waikīkī surf. Your instructor stays nearby to help position you for incoming waves, work on your timing, and coach you through each attempt. Paddle, catch the wave, pop up and when something doesn’t quite click, get specific feedback before turning around and trying again.
As the lesson continues, those small corrections begin adding up. You’ll have repeated opportunities to catch waves, work on your balance, and become more comfortable on the board. Shared lessons maintain a 4:1 surfer-to-instructor ratio, while private lessons give you a dedicated instructor who can tailor the coaching to your pace, confidence, and goals.
Finish back on the sand with a better feel for paddling, positioning, standing up, and what it actually feels like to ride a Waikīkī wave. Professional photo and video packages are also available for guests who want their first rides captured from outside the water.
