Our adventure begins near the mouth of the Wailua River. We will make a quick stop early on at a roadside overlook to observe 'O'paeka'a (O-pay-ka-a) Falls, a 151-foot bubbling cascade of white froth, tumbling down a wall of dark brown volcanic basalt. The falls are perfectly framed by walls of verdant green vegetation. 'O'paeka'a means "rolling shrimp," apparently fresh water shrimp were once seen here in such abundance that they would create a spectacle rolling off the ledge alongside the water into the sparkling pool below.
From here, we will continue deeper into the Garden Isle's lush interior, until we reach the Keahua Arboretum inside the Halelea Forest Reserve - here the pavement gives way to a rough dirt & gravel 4x4 track. This is the only public road on the island that leads so far inland, taking us very near the center of the island and close to the headwaters of the North Fork of the Wailua River at the base of Mount Wai’ale’ale.
Up, over and through will be our motto as we negotiate steep inclines, heavily rutted roads, and drive straight through flowing streams. There will be opportunities for short hikes, or simply getting out to stretch while we take in choice scenery, including views of the Wai'ale'ale Crater and the area used to film the opening scenes of the original Jurassic Park movie (remnants of the famous gates are still there!). Bring your bathing suit and towel, as we will have ample opportunity to swim in cold mountain streams surrounded by majestic scenery.

Journey deep within the Kōkeʻe State Park and the Pu'u ka Pele Forest Reserve of Waimea Canyon State Park. At times narrow and heavily rutted, our route will lead us along tapered ridges above deeply chiseled valleys painted with rock and vegetation. Witness the impressive array of green and red hues provided by nature's palate, accentuated by the abundant sunshine characteristic of this area (an excellent option for when it’s raining everywhere else on the island).
We begin our drive through rolling hills and the vast, arid farmlands that make up the majority of Kauai's "West Side." Along the way, we will pass through the historically significant towns of Hanapēpē and Waimea and gain a fresh perspective on the diverse cultural history of the island. From Waimea, we begin our climb from near sea level to over 3,000 feet - along winding, but well maintained, Waimea Canyon Drive. Early on, we'll catch our first glimpses of Waimea Canyon, duly dubbed "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific" by Mark Twain. We will stop at a couple of the choice overlooks to get out and take pictures from the choicest vantage points. The rest of our adventure consists of exploring and nature walking off of 4x4 roads leading to remote corners of the park(s).
