Our local guides take you to some of their favorite coastal spots, the places they enjoy exploring in their free time. We hope to inspire understanding, respect and reverence for these sacred, often fragile, environments. Far beyond snapping a few pretty pictures, we aim to create life changing experiences that stay with you long after you return home.

South Shore Coastal Hike to Sea Cliffs

Trail is an Easy 1- 4 miles Round Trip

This gentle stroll will take us along the edge of lithified limestone cliffs, jaggedly overhung in impossibly thin slivers over the ocean! Feel the power of the ocean, and smell the salt air, as crashing waves explode below you. The compacting of air within the cliffs creates a special surprise. Our hike will take us to a promontory, where we will see impressive views of Hāʻupu Mountain, Kawelikoa Point, and deep into the Kaua’i Channel in the direction of Oʻahu (which you can see at 108 miles away on extremely clear days). If you would like, you will also have a chance to meet our resident Giant Land Tortiouses at a nearby Wildlife Restoration Project.

Maha'ulepu (MA·HA ule·PU) is an area rich in natural and cultural history. Learn about the epic land and sea battle that was fought and won here by the people of Kaua'i in the 1300’s, giving it the name Maha'ulepu which literally means “and falling together.” As one of the last remaining stretches of undeveloped coastline on the South Shore, the Maha'ulepu area is still fiercely protected by locals, who recognise its unique historical significance and aesthetic value; and fear more resort development.

On Wed, Fri, Sat, & Sun, or by special request, our visit will include a guided tour of the nearby Makauwahi Cave Reserve to see Hawaii's largest limestone cave and richest fossil site! We will also have an opportunity to visit with giant land tortoises that are doing their part to help restore native plants. Know you’ll be doing your part, as 10% of every tour will be donated to Makauwahi Cave Reserve and/or Mālama Maha’ulepu.

North Shore Coastal Wildlife Hike

Trail is an Easy/Moderate 2-4 miles Roundtrip with 200ft of elevation gain.

Hiking this pristine stretch of undeveloped coastline will give you a sense of what ancient Kaua’i might have felt like, long before tourists left their footprints in the sand. It is in this natural setting that we will have a good chance of seeing the endangered Hawaiian monk seal. We may also see honu (green sea turtles) basking in the sand and migratory seabirds, such as mōlī (Laysan albatross), ʻiwa (great frigatebird), and red-footed boobies soaring overhead. This is a true Wild life tour!

Our hike hugs the wild coast, taking us over beaches and rocky shorelines for about two miles before reaching a rocky promontory with epic views in both directions. As you study this unspoiled terrain for shells, you'll also have the opportunity to pick up "marine debris," washed up from far-flung parts of the world (trash bags provided).

Snorkeling Adventure Add-On

After the hike, if ocean conditions permit, you will be given the option to snorkel at a beautiful South Shore location. Snorkeling will add approximately two hours to the tour time. If you choose this option during booking, please pack a lunch.

Requirements

• You must be able to walk on unpaved, uneven terrain, including jagged lava rocks, and slippery surfaces.
• This area has the potential to be rainy and windy and/or hot and sunny, so wear appropriate clothing.
• Bring sandals and closed-toe shoes to account for the different types of terrain on which we will be hiking.
• Maximum group size for North Shore Tour is 6 to limit the impact on the fragile marine environment.
