Self Guided Haleakala Downhill Bike Ride

Our self-paced Maui bike tours from the mountain to the sea along the slopes of Haleakala offer a unique biking experience and offers greater freedom and relaxation.

Explore beautiful upcountry Maui on a bike while smelling the eucalyptus and lavender, feeling the cool breeze and warm sun and stopping wherever and whenever you’d like on your way down.

You can immerse yourself in the beauty and serenity of Upcountry Maui without the cumbersome restrictions of a large group as our riders ride at their pace stopping where they’d like to stop. It’s your day biking, your way.

What to Expect

We meet at our Bike Shop at 9am on the North Shore of Maui in the surf town of Paia. Our 9am Haleakala Maui Bike Tour is by design to let the sunrise downhill vehicle traffic and local rush hour morning traffic pass so you have less vehicles on the road. The temperatures are warmer and the stores and restaurants are open along the bike route.

At our shop we supply you with your helmet, rain/wind jacket & pants, gloves, backpack, bike lock & map. Our Maui bike tour is live and interactive via a QR code for each rider to show their location as well as local points of interests.

After our safety briefing, you will enjoy a narrated van tour. On this narrated van tour, we will familiarize you with the bike route back down the slopes of Haleakala to our shop. Our expert tour guides will explain the history of upcountry Maui, points of interest, Hawaiian culture, and geological features on the route along with various restaurants and cafes where you could stop for breakfast or lunch on the way down the volcano.

Staging for this Maui bike tour is at 6,500 ft. where all bike operators on Maui begin their rides.

Our riders get to enjoy the longest self-guided ride with the least amount of climbing from the mountain to the sea. This is a self-paced Haleakala bike tour of the volcano in Maui, HI back down to our shop in Paia.

With our self-paced Haleakala bike ride, guests have the freedom to stop along the route to eat, shop, and visit historic communities, churches, unique shops, art galleries and restaurants or stop to enjoy the beauty of Haleakala.

The bike ride down Haleakala is approximately 24 miles from the drop-off point near the top of Haleakala to our shop in Paia.

Without stopping, after the van tour up, the bike ride begins at 10:30am and takes about 1 ½ hours to return to sea level and our shop around 11:30am-12pm.

However, on our self-paced bike ride, you can take your time and stop as you please. Many bikers stop to eat at the various restaurants along the route or stop to check out the little town with its many shops and galleries on the way down. On average, with stops, most people return between 12:30pm – 2:30pm.

*This bike ride is for Intermediate to Expert riders. Bikers must be comfortable biking on the roads with cars. This is a 24 mile downhill on the road, not on a bike path.

The County of Maui has passed a New Law regulating ALL commercial bicycle tour operators on Maui removing a small section of road with no shoulder from any operators routes. We provide a shuttle bypassing this section.

The most important thing is that the rider is confident riding a bike. This ride isn’t for beginners and not safe if you haven’t been on a bike in years
