The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum contains many interesting artifacts from World War Two, the Cold War and today.
USS Bowfin was launched on December 7, 1942 and was nicknamed "The Pearl Harbor Avenger". USS Bowfin was commissioned on May 1, 1943. She made nine war patrols in the Pacific Ocean during World War Two. USS Bowfin was the only United States submarine to embark an Admiral for a war patrol in the Pacific Ocean. USS Bowfin earned the Presidential Unit Citation, the Navy Unit Commendation, and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for her service during World War II. On August 1, 1979 USS Bowfin was donated to the Pacific Fleet Submarine Memorial Association to preserve and place her on public exhibition. She has been on public display since 1981 and over 8 million visitors have walked her decks. In 1986, USS Bowfin was designated a National Historic Landmark.
