Ride through the living landscape of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park as the gentle mist of the rainforest gives way to ancient lava fields, steaming vents, and the immense Kīlauea caldera.
Quick Local Tip: One of the most fun stretches comes when the pavement turns to a forested gravel road. When conditions allow, the guide gives riders room to open it up a little and speed ahead, turning part of the sightseeing ride into a genuinely fun trail-riding experience.
Begin at the park’s visitor center, then leave the pavement behind and wind through gravel trails toward Kīlauea’s steam vents and caldera. The mix of paved roads and off-road paths immediately makes this feel different from simply driving between viewpoints—you’re moving through the volcanic landscape rather than watching it pass through a windshield.
From the caldera area, ride the park roads toward Thurston Lava Tube, with the Specialized pedal-assisted e-bike taking the edge off the climbs and longer stretches. Along the way, your guide shares the geology, native ecology, and cultural stories connected to Kīlauea and Pele while you stop to take in the changing terrain.
The ride then continues onto Chain of Craters Road, one of the park’s most dramatic stretches. Rather than staying on the pavement the entire way, the route winds between roads and trails, giving you a constantly changing perspective as rainforest, lava fields, crater scenery, and steaming volcanic features unfold around the bike.
Over nearly 20 miles, the e-bike lets you cover a remarkable amount of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park without the ride becoming an endurance test. Use the pedal assist when you want it, back it off when you want more of a workout, and enjoy the freedom to explore both on and off the road.
