Rigid Inflatable Captain Cook Monument Snorkel

Location: Kona, Big Island

Explore One of Hawaii’s Most Iconic Snorkeling Destinations on a Small-Group Marine Adventure! Join a guided snorkeling tour to the famed Captain Cook Monument at Kealakekua Bay, one of the top-rated snorkeling sites in North America. Cruise the scenic Kona coastline aboard our fast and comfortable 31' Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) with a small group of no more than 10 guests. Along the way, enjoy opportunities to spot Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, vibrant reef fish, sea turtles, and more in the protected waters of this Marine Life Conservation District. Led by expert local guides and ocean stewards, this intimate experience blends world-class snorkeling, marine wildlife encounters, and rich cultural storytelling.

What to Expect

Tours depart from our slip at Honokohau Harbor, where you’ll check in with your captain and crew before boarding our custom RHIB vessel, Nature School II. With all forward-facing seats and a limited group size, you’ll have an unobstructed view as we set off down the coastline toward Kealakekua Bay, a journey filled with dramatic lava rock cliffs, sea caves, and vibrant coastline scenery.

As the boat cuts smoothly through the water, your captain will begin scanning the horizon for marine life. Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins are frequent companions along this route, and if spotted, we’ll slow down for responsible viewing while your guide shares insight into their behaviors and habitat. Keep an eye out for Bottlenose Dolphins, sea turtles, and seasonal wildlife as we navigate southward.

Arriving at Kealakekua Bay, you’ll immediately notice the clarity of the water, often with 100+ feet of visibility. This area is protected as a Marine Life Conservation District, home to over 250 species of marine life. You'll gear up with provided snorkel equipment and ease into the calm, tropical waters near the Captain Cook Monument and Ka‘awaloa Cove.

This snorkel site is surrounded by vibrant coral gardens teeming with reef fish, moray eels, spotted eagle rays, and the occasional octopus or green sea turtle. Our guides are in the water with you to assist, educate, and point out hidden marine life you might otherwise miss.

Beyond the snorkeling, your crew will share stories of the historical and cultural significance of the area, from the first contact between Hawaiians and Western explorers to the events that led to Captain Cook’s fateful end. The location itself feels timeless, nestled in a natural amphitheater of cliffs and lush greenery.

After ample time in the water, you’ll return to the boat for snacks and cold drinks. The ride back offers more scenic views and one last chance for wildlife sightings before returning to Honokohau Harbor.
