Quick Local Tip: Don't assume "no eruption" means there's nothing to see. While lava fountains come and go, Halemaʻumaʻu often develops a noticeable nighttime glow as magma rises beneath the crater, making sunset one of the best times to appreciate the volcano's ever-changing nature.
What to Expect
Your journey begins in Kona's world-famous coffee country with a visit to Bay View Farm, a family-run coffee farm overlooking Kealakekua Bay. Sample freshly brewed 100% Kona coffee while taking in sweeping coastal views as your guide introduces the island’s volcanic origins, setting the tone for the day ahead.
As you leave the Kona Coast, the scenery shifts dramatically. Travel through the Kaʻū District past expansive lava fields, dry forests, and rugged coastline before stopping at Punaluʻu Bake Shop for a taste of local island treats. Continue on to Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, where coconut palms line the shore and Hawaiian green sea turtles are often seen resting on the dark volcanic sand—an unforgettable example of how volcanic forces shape the island.
By evening, you’ll arrive at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Walk across landscapes transformed by the 2018 eruption, explore massive craters, and visit key viewpoints like Keanakakoʻi Crater, Mauna Ulu, and Volcano House. If conditions allow, the glow of lava deep inside Halemaʻumaʻu Crater provides a striking finale. Even without visible lava, the experience remains powerful and unforgettable.

Restrictions
- Guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Guests should be able to walk up stairs and walk for 20 minutes unassisted
- Volcanic emissions may affect those with respiratory concerns
- State law requires child safety seats for all guests under 4 years of age (we’re happy to supply seats at no charge with advanced notice)
- Booster seats required for all guests between ages 4 and 7 and under 4 feet 9 inches tall and 80 pounds weight (we’re happy to supply seats at no charge with advance notice)

Cancellation Policy
Guests must cancel tour no less than 24 hours before tour departure for a full refund less 10% of the total booked amount. Molten lava will not be seen. Volcanic activity changes constantly and cannot be guaranteed. Comfortable walking shoes required. We’re happy to accommodate special dietary needs and restrictions, including children’s meals, with advance notice. Order of itinerary may change. Tour runs rain or shine.
