What to Expect

The adventure begins with a rare opportunity to safely observe the Sun through a specialized solar telescope. As solar flares, prominences, and sunspots come into view, you're reminded that the star warming Hawaii's beaches is an active and constantly changing world of its own. It's a fascinating start that shifts your perspective long before nightfall arrives.

From there, you'll travel across Saddle Road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, two of the largest volcanoes on Earth. Along the way, your guide shares stories of volcanic forces, lava flows, native ecosystems, and the powerful geological events that shaped the Big Island. As the landscape changes around you, the immense scale of Hawaii becomes impossible to ignore.

As darkness settles over Maunakea, the experience reaches its unforgettable finale. Under some of the clearest and darkest skies on Earth, distant galaxies, glowing nebulae, star clusters, and planets begin to emerge through the telescope. With a warm cup of Kona coffee, dessert in hand, and the Milky Way stretching overhead, the night often leaves guests feeling both humbled and inspired by their place in the universe.

Disclaimer: This tour does not travel to the Maunakea Summit or Visitor Information Station. Stargazing takes place from select viewing areas on the mountain's slopes out of respect for Native Hawaiian cultural concerns and to provide a comfortable experience for guests of all ages.

Guests must cancel tour no less than 24 hours before tour departure for a full refund less 10% of the total booked amount. Molten lava will not be seen. Volcanic activity changes constantly and cannot be guaranteed. Comfortable walking shoes required. We’re happy to accommodate special dietary needs and restrictions, including children’s meals, with advance notice. Order of itinerary may change. Tour runs rain or shine.
