This tour is seasonal due to the Humpback Whale Migration. It is available in the Winter Only (December 15th - April 15th)
In Maui we are lucky enough to have seasonal Humpback Whales and year round Green Sea Turtles. We have a variety of tour options depending on your location and preferences. For visitors staying on the west side of Maui, we run daily and private tours from Olowalu Beach, and those on the south side tours from Makena Beach.
Come and join us for an 4 hour whale watching tour off the beautiful Makena and Olowalu Beach. We'll take you out into the channel to look for north pacific humpback whales, followed by a guided snorkel tour with our local green sea turtles.
On the morning of your tour we will meet at the designated Olowalu or Makena meeting point and get all the waiver documents signed. Next we’ll set everyone up with a life jacket, paddle, kayak, snorkel, mask, fins and dry bag.
Before we hit the water we’ll start with a brief on land tutorial which will take you through the basics of kayaking, some pointers on paddling technique, rules and regulations and a rough plan of our itinerary for the morning. We should be heading into the water around 7:45am.
We’ll jump into our kayaks and push out into the ocean. During the winter season, north pacific humpback whales are visiting Maui’s waters to mate and give birth. We’ll paddle straight out into the channel where we’ll have plenty of time to cruise and look for whales. After finding and watching Whales, we’ll then focus on paddling through areas where green sea turtles and dolphins usually hang out. Keep your eyes open!
We’ll then paddle together to the reef to find an excellent place just for us. We’ll drop anchor nearby and tie all the kayaks together so we can have a quick chat about what to expect on the guided snorkel tour.
Then it’s masks and fins on for your guided snorkel safari! After your snorkel we’ll jump back into the kayaks for a group debrief and a snack of delicious fresh Hawaiian Pineapple. Then, we’ll paddle back to the start point where your tour will conclude.
The only difference between Olowalu and Makena is location. Makena is on the south side in the heart of turtle town with rocky outcroppings and fantastic views of Haleakala. It offers maximum protection from the wind in the mornings as well and has been a guide favorite for years. This better serves those staying on the southern part of Maui such as Wailea and Kihei.
Olowalu is on the west side and is an expansive fringe reef where there are numerous turtles also. “Olo” can be a little more subjected to the wind however from time to time. This area better serves Lahaina, Ka'anapali, and beyond.
