Feel the wave lift beneath your board as you stand for the very first time, gliding across the long, gentle waves that have made Ukumehame one of Maui's easiest places to learn to surf.
Quick Local Tip: Don't rush to stand up. Ukumehame's long, gentle waves and sandy bottom give beginners the rare luxury of time. Take a breath, find your feet, and let the wave do the work. You'll be surprised how much easier surfing feels when you slow down.
Your lesson begins on the shoreline at Ukumehame Beach, where your instructor introduces the fundamentals of paddling, popping up, wave timing, and ocean safety before sharing the Hawaiian tradition of Heʻe Nalu, the ancient art of surfing. The relaxed beach setting gives you plenty of time to practice on land before heading into the warm Pacific.
Once you're in the water, your instructor stays right by your side, helping position you for each wave and offering real-time coaching with every attempt. Ukumehame's gentle, rolling waves break just off shore, in shallow water, giving beginners longer rides and more opportunities to build confidence with each successful wave.
By the end of your lesson, you've done much more than stand on a surfboard. You've experienced the thrill of catching your own waves, gained a deeper appreciation for Hawaii's surfing heritage, and discovered why so many visitors leave Maui wanting to paddle back out again.
