The art of surfing is known as “He’e Nalu,” which means “wave sliding.” For Hawaiians, surfing is a central part of our culture, and we would like to share it with you!
Quick Local Tip: Kalaeloa (aka Eisenhower) is a secluded beach with no crowds to compete with so you can catch wave after wave. During a private lesson, if fatigue kicks in, instructors will tow your board back out to the break for you, letting you save energy and keep surfing.
The experience begins on the sunny west side of Oahu at Kalaeloa Beach Park, a secluded and uncrowded stretch of coastline just a short drive from the Aulani Disney Resort and other Ko‘Olina hotels. This beach’s gentle, consistent waves and soft sandy bottom make it an ideal setting for learning to surf, far removed from the crowded breaks of Waikiki.
Upon arrival, you'll meet your certified surf instructor, who will gear you up with a rashguard, reef shoes, and a soft-top surfboard suited to your size and skill level. The lesson starts on land, with a 30-minute demonstration covering ocean safety, paddling technique, pop-up form, and wave etiquette. The goal is to ensure you're comfortable and confident before heading into the water.
Once the land training wraps, it’s time to paddle out and ride wave after wave with a sense of freedom and connection. Our lessons strive to allow you to experience surfing not just as a sport, but to feel a living part of Hawaii’s deep-rooted ocean culture.
