What to Expect

Your adventure begins the moment you slide behind the wheel of your own classic VW dune buggy. After a quick orientation, you're free to explore the Big Island on your schedule—no tour groups, no fixed itinerary, and no rush. With the soft top folded back and the warm Kona breeze all around you, even the drive between destinations becomes part of the experience.

Cruise at highway speeds as you discover hidden beaches, coastal lookouts, charming island towns, and local cafés that many visitors simply drive past. Whether you're following the shoreline along Aliʻi Drive, heading north toward the Kohala Coast, or stopping whenever a scenic overlook catches your attention, the buggy transforms an ordinary sightseeing day into an open-air island adventure. Beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, and a cooler are available upon request, making spontaneous beach stops easy.

At the end of the day, it's often not a single destination guests remember most—it's the feeling of watching lava fields, palm trees, turquoise water, and ocean sunsets roll by with nothing between you and the island except the open road.

Disclaimer: These street-legal dune buggies are designed for paved roads only. Because of this, most standard personal auto insurance policies apply just as they would for a typical car rental.

 Pickup and Delivery

Pick up and return your dune buggy free of charge at our Kailua-Kona location, just a 10-minute walk from the Kona Pier.

For added convenience, delivery and pickup service is available for an additional fee throughout the Kona and Waikoloa Resort areas, including KOA Airport, Four Seasons Resort Hualālai, Hilton Waikoloa Village, Fairmont Orchid, Mauna Lani Resort, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, and most hotels and vacation rentals along the Kohala Coast.

Our Dune Buggys

• Yellow "TANG": (2 seat buggy) Standard Transmission. Extra storage behind seats for beach gear or luggage.
• Blue "MAKO": (4 seat buggy) Standard Transmission. Bench seat in back.
• Red "TIKI": (4 seat buggy) Standard Transmission. Full size seats with open storage area behind rear seats.
• Green "HONU": (4 seat buggy AUTOMATIC) Automatic Transmission. same as Tiki, except it is an automatic.

Rental Requirements

• Drivers must be 21 years or older with a valid driver's license (English-language or International Driving Permit accepted).
• Drivers must carry personal automobile insurance.
• All drivers must be present at pickup, registered on the rental agreement, and complete the rental contract.
• Most buggies have manual transmissions. If you do not drive a stick shift, please reserve the Honu automatic buggy.
• A credit card authorization is required for optional insurance deductibles and any incidental charges.
• International drivers are required to purchase collision and liability coverage before the rental. Coverage may be purchased through RentalCover.com or another approved provider.
• Street-legal only. Buggies must remain on paved roads and parking lots. Off-roading is prohibited, GPS monitored, and subject to a $500 fee.
