Easy Kayak Tour to Flat Island

Quick Local Tip: Take your time on Popoi‘a. It's a small island, and moving slowly gives you a much better chance to spot crab or tiny fish. Crouch low and watch for subtle ripples in the tide pools. The island comes alive when you move calmly and quietly.

What to Expect

We begin this tour by meeting at our shop, located just 10 minute walk from Kailua Beach. There, you will receive a short safety briefing and are provided all the gear and permits needed to have an amazing adventure. We provide you with a "kayak caddy" so that you can easily roll your kayak the 10 minute walk to the beach. All kayaks must be transported by the customer to the beach, this is the law so we appreciate you understanding this requirement.

Once we reach the water we push off the beautiful Kailua Beach and begin our easy 15 minute paddle through the crystal-clear waters, unveiling nearby treasures including the renowned Popoiʻa Island, also known as Flat Island, a sanctuary for nesting seabirds less than a half mile offshore. During the paddle keep your eye out for Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles. You'll be paddling through their natural feeding area.

Once landed on the soft, sandy beach of Popoi'a, you will delight in a leisurely eco-hike around the island, unearthing hidden gems of endemic marine life within the captivating tide pools. If they are lucky, they may be able to see rock crabs, Bulwer’s Petrels, and if lucky, a new hatchling wedge-tailed shearwater pip!

After the guided nature walk, customers then enjoy a light snack. While eating, the majestic Koʻolau Mountain Range and dormant volcanoes provide a breathtaking backdrop to your journey. Our guides will immerse you with stories of the rich tapestry of Hawaiian and geological history.

During the paddle back, be on the lookout for the graceful Hawaiian Green Sea-Turtle, fondly known as "Honu", as they gracefully navigate these pristine waters and may even grace you with their presence, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
After the easy paddle back, you will caddy your kayaks back to the shop and are welcome enjoy a few hours on the beach with complimentary gear, including snorkeling gear, beach mats, beach chairs, boogie boards, & secure locker. A locally prepared picnic lunch is also provided for you to enjoy at one of the many picnic tables in Kailua Beach Park. 

**If you are booking the afternoon tour, please arrive 2 hours early to enjoy beach time and complimentary lunch. The shop closes at 5pm so you will not be able to do so after the tour.

Restrictions

  • Minimum 8 years-old for group tours.
  • Under 8 can book private-group tours.
  • Particapants under 16 must paddle in a double kayak with an adult, 18 or older.
  • All participants must be able to swim.
  • Kayaking is a physical activity that does require a moderate level of fitness.
  • Kayaks must also be transported via cart to the beach (5-10 min walk).

Cancellation Policy

  • There is a $25 rescheduling fee per-person if the activity is rescheduled after 12:00 PM the day preceding the activity date.
  • There is no charge for one-day prior cancellation as long as it is canceled before 12:00 PM the day preceding the activity date.
  • There is a cancellation fee of one hundred percent (100%), if cancelled after 12:00 PM the day preceding the activity date.
  • No shows will be billed at 100 percent (100%) net rate.
  • In the event that we must cancel a tour, we will try to reschedule customers the following day at their convenience. If we are unable to accommodate a reschedule, customers are entitled to a one- hundred-percent (100%) refund.
  • Groups consisting of 14 participants or more and/or customized activity packages require 7 days notice of cancellation to avoid a 50% charge and may incur additional fees based upon arrangements.
