Catch the shuttle straight into Diamond Head Crater and walk the storied trail to its 760-foot summit, where Waikīkī, the Koʻolau range, and the open Pacific spread out beneath you. It’s the simplest way to experience Hawaiʻi’s most iconic hike without the parking stress or permit juggling.
Quick Local Tip: Near the start of the trail, watch the bushes along the paved path. Mongooses love to dart out and sprint across the walkway, disappearing before most hikers even realize what they saw.
Your experience begins with a comfortable round-trip shuttle ride from Waikiki to Diamond Head State Monument. Upon arrival, you'll enter the crater itself, a massive, 3,520-foot wide volcanic tuff cone formed over 150,000 years ago. A brief orientation and a complimentary map will help you get oriented before you set off on the self-guided trail.
The hike follows a well-traveled path that gradually climbs through a series of switchbacks, offering increasing views of the crater floor below. While the beginning of the trail is paved, the terrain becomes more rugged and uneven as you ascend. Midway through, you’ll encounter a tunnel and steep staircases that mark the final push to the summit.
At the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping, 360-degree views over Waikiki, the Koʻolau Mountains, and the glistening Pacific Ocean. Cool trade winds and historic military bunkers at the summit provide a unique backdrop for photos and a well-earned rest. After soaking in the scenery, make your way back down at your own pace to meet the shuttle for your return to Waikiki.
