What to Expect

Meet Captain Chris Freed and his crew in Haleʻiwa and start with the two things that shape the trip: what has been biting and how your group wants to fish. First-timers can learn as they go, while experienced anglers can work with the crew toward bigger targets and more challenging fish.

From Haleʻiwa Harbor, head offshore toward the fishing grounds where Captain Freed works areas that have been productive in the days leading up to your trip. Depending on conditions and the bite, the crew may fish around state-maintained FAD buoys that attract pelagic species including ahi, aku, ono, mahi mahi, and marlin.

Once a fish hits, everything changes fast. The reel comes alive, the crew gets you into position, and the fight is on. They’ll coach you through the technique, help you stay connected, and give you every chance to bring that fish alongside the Pamela Pearl.

Between strikes, settle into the rhythm of the day aboard the spacious 35-foot Bertram. Stretch out in the cabin, grab a seat on the back deck, or climb up to the flybridge and watch the North Shore disappear behind you as the crew keeps hunting for the next bite.

Eventually, turn back toward Haleʻiwa with the afternoon light stretching across the water and the North Shore coming back into view. After hours of watching lines, chasing fish, and feeling that sudden rush when a reel starts screaming, the ride home has a pretty satisfying feeling to it, especially if there’s fresh catch in the box.
