Chinaman's Hat Kayak Rentals

Location: East Oahu, Oahu

Tour Highlights

Paddle out across calm, reef-protected waters to Chinaman’s Hat. Then beach your kayak, hike the island, and take in unreal views of the Koʻolau Mountains straight out of a movie. This is one of Oʻahu’s rare DIY adventures: no crowds, no engine noise, just you, the ocean, and a volcanic islet begging to be explored.

  • Paddle 15–30 minutes across calm reef-protected lagoon to Chinaman’s Hat island
  • Land your kayak on a basalt islet with Koʻolau Mountain views
  • Climb the summit trail for panoramas of Kualoa Ranch
  • Swim and explore tide pools at a quiet backside sand cove
  • Hike shoreline trails and spot wedge-tailed shearwater in ground nests

Quick Local Tip: Plan your launch near low tide for more space when landing your kayak. Also, reef shoes help with the rocky landing and tide pools.

What to Expect

Pick up your kayak and gear from the Kailua storefront, where the team will help secure everything to your four-door vehicle and provide instructions before you make the scenic drive to Kualoa Regional Park.

From the beach, launch into the turquoise waters of Kāneʻohe Bay and paddle roughly 0.75 miles toward Mokoliʻi (Chinaman’s Hat), rising dramatically against the Koʻolau Mountains. Reef-protected shallows generally make for an easy launch and calm ocean conditions.

Land on Mokoliʻi's rocky shoreline and set out on foot to explore a side of the island few people ever see. Follow the trail around the island to discover a secluded backside beach, shallow cave, volcanic tide pools, and sweeping views across the bay toward Kualoa's cinematic mountain landscape. Experienced hikers can also attempt the challenging climb toward the summit, where the final ascent becomes steep and advanced.

When you're ready, return to your kayak for the paddle back toward Kualoa Regional Park, often with the prevailing wind helping you toward shore. Allow roughly three hours to paddle and explore without rushing.
