Experience the thrill of playing the “sport of kings” with beginner-friendly polo lessons on Oahu’s iconic North Shore. Ride seasoned polo ponies along the beach and learn the fundamentals of the game in a fun, supportive environment.
Quick Local Tip: If you’re new to swinging a mallet, loosen your grip. Most beginners hold too tight. A relaxed hand gives you a smoother arc and lets the pony’s movement naturally carry your swing.
Upon arrival at the stables on Oahu’s North Shore, you'll be welcomed by your instructor and introduced to the horses. They are real working polo ponies trained to be responsive, patient, and beginner-friendly. These aren’t your average trail horses; they’re athletes used to the energy and precision of the game, making them the perfect partners for newcomers.
After a short safety briefing and equipment overview, you'll start on the ground with a hands-on demonstration of how to hold and swing the polo mallet. Instructors will guide you through the mechanics and posture needed for control and accuracy. No previous experience is required. Once comfortable, you’ll mount your horse and head into a gently paced riding session in a spacious beachside arena.
First-time riders will focus on building balance and getting a feel for the horse’s movement. From there, you’ll practice hitting the ball at a walk, learning how to coordinate your swing with the horse’s rhythm. As your confidence grows, more experienced participants may progress to a light trot, putting new skills to the test while maneuvering the horse and mallet simultaneously.
Throughout the session, instructors provide personalized coaching, adjusting the pace and difficulty based on your comfort and ability. The setting itself is unforgettable — ocean views, the salty breeze, and the sound of hoofbeats on soft sand create a distinctively Hawaiian twist on this traditional sport.
The experience wraps up with a cool-down ride and time to connect with your horse before dismounting. You'll leave not only with a basic understanding of polo, but also with a deep appreciation for the skill and teamwork involved in the game.
