Feel the rush of excitement as you glide through the ocean after catching your first wave on the world-famous North Shore, the mecca of surfing and a true badge of honor for anyone who rides here. With the mountains behind you, the lineup opening ahead, and that first drop kicking in, you’ll understand instantly why surfers chase this feeling for life.
Quick Local Tip: At Chun’s, keep the lifeguard tower in sight; at Puaʻena, line yourself up with the ironwood treeline. Using those land markers to check your position helps you stay right over the cleanest part of the reef, so the waves break smoother and you won’t drift into the deep channel without realizing it.
Lessons take place daily on Oʻahu’s legendary North Shore. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your instructor at either Chun’s Reef or Puaʻena Point, two surf breaks known for their consistent waves and gentle conditions, ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. Your guide will assess the day’s ocean conditions and choose the best beach for the safest and most rewarding experience.
The session begins with a quick gear fitting. Then you'll be provided a surfboard suited to your size and skill level, along with a rash guard for comfort and sun protection. Then, it's a 15-minute land-based lesson covering ocean safety, paddling techniques, how to pop up on the board, and tips on reading waves. Instructors take the time to explain how to move confidently in the water, with a strong emphasis on safety, awareness, and ocean respect which are foundational values in Hawaiian surf culture.
Next, you’ll head into the water for up to 90 minutes of guided surfing. Your instructor will be right there beside you, offering real-time feedback, encouragement, and gentle corrections to help you stand up and ride your first wave — often within just a few attempts. For intermediate and advanced surfers, the coaching focuses more on wave selection, timing, maneuver refinement, and style.
Group lessons maintain a high instructor-to-student ratio to ensure individual attention and safety. For younger children (ages 2–12) or guests with adaptive needs, private lessons offer a one-on-one experience with enhanced support and customized instruction.
Both Chun’s Reef and Puaʻena Point offer scenic, uncrowded settings with long rolling waves, the perfect backdrop for your introduction to surfing. The experience wraps up with time to debrief, ask questions, and snap a few photos to remember your time in the water.
