North Shore Surf Girls is a female-founded, family-owned surf school rooted in Oʻahu’s North Shore surf community. Founder Carol Philips grew up in Hawaiʻi and began bodyboarding the North Shore at 14, eventually becoming a two-time national champion, the first woman to compete at Pipeline, and the founder of the Women’s Pipe Championships. She also worked as an event coordinator on Blue Crush, helping bring North Shore surf culture to audiences around the world.
Carol created North Shore Surf Girls around a simple idea: make surfing feel safe, supportive, and accessible, especially for beginners and women, while welcoming anyone who wants to get in the water. Since 2005, the school has taught guests at North Shore breaks including Puaʻena Point and Chun’s Reef, with a team of instructors whose backgrounds span competitive surfing, lifeguarding, swimming, water polo, and decades spent in Hawaiʻi’s ocean.
More than a surf school, North Shore Surf Girls reflects the community that shaped it. Local, encouraging, ocean-minded, and proud to share a piece of North Shore surf culture with each new student.
