Start your day with Oʻahu’s most spectacular light as you chase the sunrise along the island’s dramatic southeastern coast with an incredibly efficient 3-hour itinerary. Guided by a photography expert who knows exactly where (and when) the magic happens. From golden surf to sweeping coastal cliffs, this tour delivers professional-level shots in an approachable, beginner-friendly way.
Quick Local Tip: At Sandy Beach, don’t just shoot the sunrise straight on, explore the shoreline. The mix of soft white sand and flat lava rock shelves creates shallow tide pools that catch and reflect the morning light, giving you incredible opportunities for reflection shots, foreground texture, and creative compositions.
The tour begins approximately one hour before sunrise, with pickup from select Waikiki hotels. The early start is worth it—as the van winds along Oahu’s coastal highway, the first hints of dawn begin to break over the Pacific. Your guide, a knowledgeable local photographer, will help you get set up at the first stop: Sandy Beach, one of the most picturesque locations on the island to watch the sunrise.
As the sun rises above the horizon, golden light washes over the crashing surf and rugged lava rocks. With the dramatic Koko Crater and Koʻolau Mountains as your backdrop, this spot offers ideal conditions for capturing wide-angle landscapes and subtle light shifts as day breaks. Your guide will provide assistance with camera settings and composition as needed, whether you're using a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or smartphone.
From there, the group makes its way to the Makapu‘u Lookout, where sweeping views of the coastline and offshore islets await. The light here is soft and filtered, creating an entirely different mood—perfect for capturing long exposures or minimalist coastal scenes.
Next, it’s a short ride to the Halona Blowhole, where ocean waves crash into the rocky shore, sending plumes of seawater high into the air. The dramatic movement and natural energy of this location offer a unique challenge and reward for photographers looking to capture the power of the ocean.
To end the morning, the group heads back toward town with one final stop: Leonard’s Bakery, home of the famous malasada. Each guest receives a freshly made malasada—a warm, sugar-coated Portuguese donut beloved by locals. It’s the perfect way to refuel after an early morning of shooting.
You’ll return to Waikiki just as the rest of the island is waking up—camera full, appetite satisfied, and memories captured in golden light.
We pick you up at your hotel in Waikiki. If your hotel is outside of Waikiki, which is from the Ala Moana Hotel to the end of Kalakaua, we ask you to make your way to the paid parking area of the Honolulu Zoo.
