Ko'Olina Surf Lessons

Location: West Oahu, Oahu

Tour Highlights

Catch your first real waves on O‘ahu’s quiet west side, where warm water, sandy bottom breaks, and local instructors make learning feel natural and unrushed. The art of surfing is known as “He’e Nalu,” which means “wave sliding.” For Hawaiians, surfing is a central part of our culture, and we would like to share it with you!

  • Surf the secluded Kalaeloa Beach Park waves with no crowds
  • Learn pop-ups and safety during guided on-beach instruction
  • Ride soft rolling waves with hands-on coaching in the water
  • Progress faster with low student-to-instructor ratios
  • Connect with Hawaiian surfing culture through local expertise

Quick Local Tip: Kalaeloa (aka Eisenhower) is a secluded beach with no crowds to compete with so you can catch wave after wave. During a private lesson, if fatigue kicks in, instructors will tow your board back out to the break for you, letting you save energy and keep surfing.

What to expect

The experience begins on the sunny west side of Oahu at Kalaeloa Beach Park, a secluded and uncrowded stretch of coastline just a short drive from the Aulani Disney Resort and other Ko‘Olina hotels. This beach’s gentle, consistent waves and soft sandy bottom make it an ideal setting for learning to surf, far removed from the crowded breaks of Waikiki.

Upon arrival, you'll meet your certified surf instructor, who will gear you up with a rashguard, reef shoes, and a soft-top surfboard suited to your size and skill level. The lesson starts on land, with a 30-minute demonstration covering ocean safety, paddling technique, pop-up form, and wave etiquette. The goal is to ensure you're comfortable and confident before heading into the water. Once the land training wraps, it’s time to paddle out and ride wave after wave with a sense of freedom and connection. Our lessons strive to allow you to experience surfing not just as a sport, but to feel a living part of Hawaii’s deep-rooted ocean culture.

Group Lesson

Our most popular option for beginners to intermediate surfers, this group surf lesson in Kapolei delivers high-quality surf instruction at an incredible value. Your class never has more than four students for each instructor, so you’re sure to get plenty of personalized attention. Participants must be at least 13 years old or at least 100 lbs. in weight.

PLEASE NOTE: Group participants are required to paddle their own surfboards back to their instructor with little or no assistance. Men over 230 lbs./women over 200 lbs. or those requiring a life jacket should book a Private Lesson for safety reasons.

Private Surf Lesson

Whether you're catching your very first wave or looking for a safe, supportive introduction to surfing for your keiki (ages 3–11), our one-on-one private surf lesson offers a fully personalized experience. With dedicated instruction from an experienced and friendly surf coach, you'll learn at your own pace in the gentle, beginner-friendly waves of West Oahu.

For younger kids, instructors stay close by at all times, often surfing tandem or alongside them, to ensure safety, boost confidence, and make the experience fun from start to finish. For teens and adults, the private format offers focused coaching, quicker progression, and the flexibility to tailor the session to your comfort and goals. It's the safest and most effective way to learn to surf in Hawaii.

Exclusive Adult Lesson

This is a great option for our lovely couples or groups of two. Our 2:1 student to instructor ratio makes this a great option for siblings, honeymooners, couples, or best friends wanting to share the experience in a setting more private than our traditional group lesson.
