Quick Local Tip: During night dives, aim your light slightly ahead and to the side rather than directly at creatures. This angled beam reveals far more eyeshine and helps spot octopus and eels before they tuck back into the reef.

What to Expect

Descend into Oʻahu’s reef after dark, when familiar coral formations transform and nocturnal marine life emerges from hiding. Your dive master selects the best North or South Shore site based on seasonal surf, ocean conditions, and your experience level, then leads a small group of no more than six divers into the darkness.

By flashlight, search reef crevices for octopus, squid, slipper lobsters, moray eels, colorful shrimp, and other creatures rarely seen during daylight dives. With many Hawaiian marine species found nowhere else on Earth, every sweep of your light can reveal something unexpected.

Then comes one of the night’s most surreal moments: turn off the lights and move your hands through the water to reveal tiny flashes of bioluminescence glowing around you like underwater stars. After soaking in the darkness, switch the lights back on and continue exploring the reef alongside your guide.
