Descend into darkness on this guided night scuba dive, where octopus emerge from reef crevices, slipper lobsters scuttle across the sand, and bioluminescence flickers like underwater starlight, revealing a, otherworldly side of Hawaiʻi’s reefs few ever get to see.
Quick Local Tip: During night dives, aim your light slightly ahead and to the side rather than directly at creatures. This angled beam reveals far more eyeshine and helps spot octopus and eels before they tuck back into the reef.
What to Expect
Nightfall transforms Hawaii’s reefs into a surreal underwater theater, and this guided night scuba dive offers front-row seats to one of the ocean’s most captivating performances. As the sun dips below the horizon, you'll meet your experienced dive master at a designated site, either along Oahu’s North Shore or South Shore, depending on the season and surf conditions. During summer months (May–September), when the typically powerful waves of the North Shore subside, the dive often takes place in its clear, tranquil waters. In winter, the action shifts south, to the protected reef systems just off Waikiki. After booking, your dive master will reach out to confirm the ideal dive site based on conditions and your experience level.
Once briefed, geared up, and paired with one of our professional instructors, never more than six divers per guide, you’ll head below the surface into a world where Hawaii’s isolation comes to life in the most mesmerizing ways. Flashlights illuminate hidden alcoves, revealing vibrant reef creatures that remain tucked away during the day. Expect close encounters with nocturnal marine life like octopus, squid, slipper lobster, moray eels, and vividly hued shrimp. These aren’t just any species; roughly 25% of what you’ll see here is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and can’t be found anywhere else on Earth.
Perhaps the most magical moment of the dive comes when the lights go off. With a simple wave of your hand, trails of glowing bioluminescence shimmer through the water, like stars scattered beneath the waves. It’s an exhilarating sensation that experienced divers describe as unforgettable, and newcomers quickly fall in love with.
Throughout the dive, safety is paramount. With small group sizes and personalized attention, you can relax and immerse yourself in this dazzling underwater world with confidence.
