Waikiki Shark & Shipwreck Snorkel Tour

Location: Waikiki, Oahu

Tour Highlights

Escape the crowds and dive into an intimate, eco-conscious snorkeling experience where you'll encounter sharks, sea turtles, and dolphins above the sunken Sea Tiger shipwreck

  • Snorkel above the haunting 160-ft Sea Tiger wreck with crystal-clear views from the surface
  • Spot Hawaiian reef sharks, turtles, and pelagic fish at a site far less crowded than neighboring snorkel sites
  • Enjoy a small-group, eco-conscious experience with only six guests per tour
  • Learn from lifeguard-certified guides who share marine biology, ocean safety, and cultural insight
  • Take in stunning views of Diamond Head, Ala Moana, and the Waikīkī skyline during the cruise out

Quick Local Tip: Some days the shipwreck is crystal clear from the surface, and other days it's just a shadow. But don’t let that fool you, even when the wreck isn’t visible from the boat, the sharks are still down there, and they’ll rise higher in the water column once swimmers get in.

What to Expect

Guests begin their experience by boarding our custom-outfitted vessel at Ala Wai Boat Harbor, a short walk from most Waikīkī hotels. After a warm welcome and quick introductions, our crew outfits each guest with top-tier snorkel gear, ensuring comfort and safety before departure. As the boat cruises past the Ala Moana coastline, you’ll catch panoramic views of Diamond Head Crater and the world-famous Ala Moana Bowls surf break, known for both its waves and its deep ties to Hawaiian surf history.

Upon arrival at the Sea Tiger site, a former Chinese trading vessel intentionally sunk in the late 1990s to create an artificial reef, you’ll receive a detailed safety briefing covering wildlife etiquette, snorkeling techniques, and our “look, don’t touch” approach to marine interaction. This site is less trafficked than typical tourist spots like Turtle Canyon, allowing a more peaceful, uncrowded, and authentic ocean experience.

After anchoring near the shipwreck, guests gently enter the water and begin their 35-minute snorkeling session. The Sea Tiger, lying at 75 feet below, creates a dramatic underwater scene, attracting a wide range of pelagic fish, reef sharks, green sea turtles, and occasionally pods of Hawaiian spinner dolphins. While the wreck itself lies beyond recreational snorkeling depth, its silhouette is clearly visible and often surrounded by schools of tropical fish, graceful turtles, and the occasional circling shark.

Throughout the snorkel, your guides remain in the water, diving down to identify marine life, demonstrate sustainable spearfishing techniques, and ensure all interactions remain hands-free and safe. The chance to witness sharks in their natural habitat is one of the major highlights of this tour, unlike the busier Waikiki snorkeling reefs, this site has a much higher likelihood of shark and pelagic fish sightings.

Once everyone is back aboard, the crew provides a short talk on ocean conservation, Hawaiian fishing practices, and the importance of marine stewardship, connecting the experience to broader efforts for sustainable tourism in Hawai‘i.

With salty smiles and unforgettable memories, the tour ends with a heartfelt mahalo and a “see you next time” as we return to the harbor.
