Climb into the saddle and follow quiet mountain trails during a horseback ride above West Oʻahu, where the air cools, the ocean stretches endlessly below, and every step feels unhurried and grounding. This is the Waiʻanae Mountains at their most peaceful. Wide open and timeless, you'll feel every gentle step as the landscape opens around you.
Quick Local Tip: When you’re in the tack room, ask your guide about the horses’ personalities\. They love sharing the stories, and it makes the ride instantly more personal. You’ll have time to pet and treat your horse first, and that early connection shows up later in how calm, affectionate, and responsive they feel beneath you.
Arrive at Camp Pālehua 30 minutes before your scheduled ride to check in. After signing a waiver and selecting a properly fitted helmet, you’ll receive a brief safety demonstration before being matched with a well-trained polo pony suited to your size and experience level.
Once mounted, your guide will lead the group along a scenic ridgeline trail, where you’ll take in sweeping views of O‘ahu’s southern and western coastline. The horses move at a steady walking pace, making this ride enjoyable for beginners and experienced riders alike. Keep an eye out for cattle grazing along the trail and native plant species unique to the conservation land.
If you choose the Sunshine Ride, you’ll enjoy the warmth of the midday sun illuminating the mountains and ocean below. Opting for the Sunset Ride means witnessing the sky transform into hues of gold and pink as the sun dips below the horizon, a truly magical sight.
Along the way, the guide will pause for photos at a picturesque lookout point, ensuring you have a lasting memory of your experience. Upon returning to the stables, guests will have the opportunity to feed the horses a treat before concluding their adventure.
For a more personal experience, the Private Ride offers the same scenic journey but with the exclusivity of your own group. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, planning a romantic outing, or simply seeking a quieter ride, this option allows for a more tailored experience with your guide. The smaller group size allows for more flexibility in pacing and additional opportunities for questions, storytelling, and personalized guidance from your trail leader. As with the group rides, you’ll have a dedicated photo stop along the way, and upon return, you can interact with the horses before concluding your experience.
