Glide effortlessly across North Shore waters as turtles drift below your feet, reef colors glow through crystal-clear panels, and Haleʻiwa’s laid-back energy sets the pace. It’s calm, intimate, and quietly magical like floating above a living aquarium.
Quick Local Tip: Don’t be fooled by the river’s murkier water, Haleʻiwa’s turtles are unusually calm and often float just below the surface. Move slowly and you’ll glide right over them, with clear-bottom views you’d never expect from above.
Check-in begins 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time in the laid-back surf town of Haleiwa on Oahu’s iconic North Shore. After meeting your guide and fellow paddlers, you’ll get fitted with a life jacket and go through a brief safety orientation. Your guide, a certified and experienced waterman, will also explain how to handle the kayak and what to look for once you’re out on the water.
You’ll launch directly from the calm waters of the Haleiwa River, an ideal starting point for beginners. This area is known for its abundance of Hawaiian green sea turtles, often seen cruising slowly through the river’s shallow, clear waters. As you paddle at a relaxed pace, your glass bottom kayak gives you a crystal-clear view of the riverbed below, where fish dart between pockets of coral and rocks.
From the river, you’ll make your way toward the open ocean and follow a coastal route toward Pua‘ena Point. Along the way, your guide will point out native birds, hidden beaches, and unique geological features carved by volcanic activity and ocean swell. You may spot reef fish, sea cucumbers, or even an octopus moving between coral heads. Thanks to the see-through panel beneath your feet, you’ll never miss what’s happening below the surface.
Upon reaching Pua‘ena Point, your guide will anchor the group in a calm, protected area. If conditions allow and you’re up for it, you’ll have the option to hop in the water and snorkel with provided gear getting you even closer to the marine life you’ve been observing from above. This stop is also a great place to rest, hydrate, or snap photos of the coastline and your kayak in the crystal-clear waters.
After about two hours on the water, you’ll paddle back to your launch point in Haleiwa. Most guests return feeling refreshed, inspired, and with a newfound appreciation for the marine ecosystems of Oahu’s North Shore.
