Slip into the cool, emerald rainforest of Manoa Valley and follow a lush jungle trail to the base of its 150-foot waterfall, a setting so cinematic it’s been featured in Jurassic Park and LOST. With shuttle service from Waikīkī, it’s the easiest way to experience one of Oʻahu’s most enchanting hikes.
Quick Local Tip: About halfway up the trail, look for the massive banyan tree whose branches form a natural arch over the path. It’s one of the most photographed spots on the hike, but easy to miss if you’re focused on the climb.
Your experience begins with a convenient hotel pick-up in Waikiki. As the shuttle leaves the urban landscape behind, you’ll travel into the misty, green heart of Manoa Valley, a rainforest nestled just minutes outside the city. On arrival, your driver will provide you with a complimentary bottle of water, bug spray, and a walking stick for added stability.
The trailhead begins with a footbridge over a small stream and quickly draws you into a towering grove of eucalyptus and monkeypod trees. As the elevation gently rises, the sounds of exotic birds fill the air, and the scent of wild ginger and damp earth accompanies you deeper into the forest. Expect to encounter occasional staircases, large rocks, and muddy patches, especially after rainfall. These natural challenges add a touch of adventure to the otherwise moderate trail.
After about 45 minutes, the path leads you to a scenic viewing area facing the base of Manoa Falls, where water cascades 150 feet down a steep cliff into a small pool below. Surrounded by emerald foliage and jungle mist, it’s a breathtaking spot for photos or simply soaking in the serene atmosphere before retracing your steps back to the shuttle pick-up area.
