Sail Ko Olina’s coast in effortless luxury as soft trade winds fill the sails, the sky turns molten gold, and the crew serves handcrafted Hawaiian-inspired dishes alongside a full open bar. With only six guests aboard, every sunset feels private, personal, and unmistakably first-class.
Quick Local Tip: Keep your eyes off the starboard side of the boat as the sun meets the horizon. West Oʻahu’s angle from the catamaran gives you one of the best views of seeing the elusive green flash, a brief green shimmer caused by light bending in the atmosphere at the last split-second of sunset. On a perfectly clear evening, it’s a tiny moment most guests never forget.
The tour begins at the Ko Olina Marina, where guests are greeted by the captain and crew of the spacious 46-foot sailing catamaran designed for open-ocean cruising. With just six passengers aboard, the atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried, and there’s ample space to stretch out and enjoy the setting. As the vessel departs and sails north along the leeward coast, the Waianae Mountains rise dramatically to the east while golden beaches and cobalt waters stretch along the shore.
With the sails catching the trade winds, the catamaran glides smoothly across the water. Guests are invited to settle in with a drink from the open bar which includes a selection of beer, wine, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages and take in the changing light as the sun begins its descent. The late afternoon is often rich with wildlife sightings. Spinner dolphins, flying fish, and Hawaiian green sea turtles are common, and during the winter months, humpback whales may be spotted offshore.
As the sun lowers toward the horizon, the crew begins serving the Captain’s Tasting Menu: a rotating selection of gourmet Hawaiian-inspired small plates. Dishes may include seared ahi salad, sweet and spicy sushi spoons, short rib steak, local herbed chicken, and Hawaiian-style fried rice, each plated with care and flavor-forward presentation.
Throughout the meal, guests can move freely around the vessel, lounging on beanbags at the bow, seated at the stern table, or simply standing at the rail to watch the coastline slip by. The golden hour gradually gives way to deep reds and purples, and finally, the sky darkens as the sun dips below the horizon. It’s a peaceful and visually stunning end to the day, experienced from one of the most exclusive settings on the island.
